Comic time:

MY STUPID LIFE

Panel three represents an actual TERRIBLE drunken sketch I did in Houston two or so weekends ago, except that the sketch I drew in real life also contained a written apology for being too intoxicated to draw a reasonable sketch. It should be noted that, even when sober I cannot draw anything good inks first, I always have to pencil first. Always. It should also be noted that I was not driving the night in question, no worries. Don't drink and drive, kids. And stay in school and eat your vegetables!

Meanwhile, another offering for the Kansas City Pitch:

The theme was "Rugby Boys vs Roller Girls". Good times!

Upcoming Hurricanes

I'd like to see more damage assessments for hurricanes hitting New York and flooding Manhattan -- something like the 1938 Long Island Express, but aimed a bit more to the west. It's just a matter of time.

Does He Want it to Rain

[info]beatonna

Well I mean really it is pretty silly

I took a break from making comics! I didn't really mean to, but I was out of town, and then I was out of the country.

Over the weekend I went to Chicago to the Pitchfork music festival! It was so nice. I stayed with John Campbell and his thousand roommates (he has a thousand roommates) and had a wonderful time also with Sara Bauer and Tom McHenry! I was so thrilled to hang out with those guys it was straight up embarrassing.

John and I had a little talk about internets, later I drew it:

I get the question "what is it like to be famous on the internet" a lot and I think the answer is a blank stare.

Anyway, I must say, the set by Animal Collective was so good and definitely the best part but I was delighted to hear from this group, the Fleet Foxes, who have the nicest music and the nicest little video too (here is is for you!)

Of course, anyone who was there would have recognized John and I pretty fast because we are very recognizable people:

Anyway I am back now, more comics soon.

Fletcher Hanks

http://www.entrecomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/ishall.jpg

Rory Hayes

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v127/deformity/t1-2.jpg

These two artists are fascinating. Their strengths lie in their flaws. Fletcher Hanks' characters become horrific nightmare versions of what normal artists would draw because he has no knowledge of craftsmanship. I suspect he somehow wound up making comics by accident after not having drawn since he was a kid (little is known about his history). Rory Hayes is kind of a talentless virtuoso. His lack of skill results in subtly bone chilling pages, as if a paranoid schizophrenic drew them during a psychotic episode.

You can't say comic art is a superficial quality. Comic art defines a comic, probably moreso than story content. You can have a comic with no story, you can't have a comic with no art. But I think that poor craftsmanship doesn't necessarily mean bad art.

Batman Lines

Colors to come.

Photobucket

Saw Batman twice on opening day, and loved it equally both times.

A friend of mine has apparently been buying pieces of a Batman costume over the past year, and was able to complete the suit in time for the midnight showing. It was so legit, he had to move his whole body to look around him. Random people wanted pictures with him, too.

Lucky Number 3

My Mom hadn't seen The Dark Knight yet, so guess what I did today? ;)
I saw the Dark Knight. Again.
Before the movie, I noticed different trailers from the ones I had seen before. I made me a little curious and then... The lights dimmed, the surround-sound was boosted up, and the Watchmen trailer popped onto the screen. I was SO happy. I've probably watched that trailer over and over, but never have I seen it on the big screen. And, until you've seen it with the sound up as loud as it could possibly go, you haven't experienced it. I swear my hair was rushing behind me by how loud the music was blasting.

That made my day. :) :) :)

Anyway, I've been trying out some new coloring techniques. I want to continue Murphy and start a mini-comic with my superhero (I finally came up with a plot-line that would suit her), but I want to remain consistent with the coloring style I use in case I ever feel like printing it as a mini-book.

I like the way I colored Rorschach (above), but I feel as if I should be getting better results from the amount of time I spend coloring. There has to be an easier way or maybe I'm just paying too much attention to the details.

Does anybody have any tips on coloring?

AWESOME!

I just paid my electric bill with money I LITERALLY DON'T HAVE!
this is really gonna hurt my next paycheck and i need to smoke so many cigarettes right now

I really need to get a second job just to have Living Money so I can devote my primary paycheck completely to bills. I also need to remember to pay my bills when my paycheck comes in instead of at the last minute.

Though I guess it works out that I didn't get to see The Dark Knight this weekend!
i think i'm going to need to go smoke another cigarette now, even though i only have two boxes of matches left and won't have the 79 goddamn cents to buy another pack until friday and i really hate my backup lighters

I wonder how many people have been misdiagnosed as bipolar because their own means of fulfillment are simply misunderstood or not recognized at all by their diagnosticians.

They say there's a strong correlation between bipolar folks and artists. If a man receives a promotion, and he's ecstatic, but then his mom dies, and he's miserable, that's not considered bipolar, that's considered healthy and normal. I think artists are diagnosed as bipolar because their own definitions of tragedy, their own standards of success and failure, are not all-encompassingly objective, they are specific to the artist.

A layman might see a painter finish a beautiful landscape and then sit down and look resigned and utterly depressed, and that would seem like a random mood shift, but the painter knows that he didn't try his best, that he didn't challenge himself. Or he knows that, expertly painted as it is, maybe it lacks the atmosphere he was going for, maybe he feels like it doesn't really evoke anything profound. Likewise, an artist might be proud of a comic drawn in stick figures and the layman might think he has an inflated ego, but maybe being willing to draw humble stick figures and tell a straight forward story is a personal triumph for an artist who's always obsessed over marketability and professionalism rather than expression or substance.

Those are easy examples, a lot of what goes on with an artist's mood has no tangible evidence and is understandable only to the artist. Maybe an artist is depressed as hell because he hasn't drawn anything in months. Maybe a writer is happy because he hasn't written anything in months.
